Multi-wall Polycarbonate

Available with two, three and now five wall construction, Multi-wall sheet provides excellent thermal insulation, as well as a UV protected surface to resist yellowing. This makes it ideal for all kinds of roof glazing applications, from green houses and conservatories to factories.

Multi-wall sheet has a very high stiffness to weight ratio, it is very light, yet offers extremely high impact strength, minimizing the risk of breakage due to hailstorms or dislodged roof tiles. As the sheet weight is very low, support structures need not be as heavy as in the case of traditional materials. This in turn offers savings in structure and installation costs. 10mm and 16mm thick sheet can be cold formed to provide curved glazing for barrel vaults or canopies.

Glazing methods for polycarbonate differ from those normally used for glass, because of its greater thermal expansion and flexibility. Care must be taken that products used are compatible with polycarbonate (EPDM - or Neoprene rubbers, never plasticized PVC). Not all silicone sealants are suitable. Engineering & Design Plastics stock silicone sealant to BS5889 type A, which is compatible with polycarbonate.

Service Temperature
Multi-wall Polycarbonate can be installed in a diversity of applications, with varying temperatures. The material’s mechanical performance is known to remain stable in prolonged service in temperatures ranging from –40 to +100 oC.

Installation
Applications of Multi-wall Polycarbonate must make adequate allowance for thermal movement, nominally 3.5 mm per metre.

Fire Performance
The fire performance of Multi-wall polycarbonate has been independently tested and the following classifications obtained (UK) BS476: Part 7: CLASS 1Y
